Advanced Origami Workshop

Today we had an advanced origami workshop with David Kandel for those of us who were interested in utilizing origami work in our research project.

Tessellations: A repeated pattern that rotates around its center

Building a Tessellation:
Considered the fact that there are only 3 regular polygons

  1. Equilateral triangle
    • 3 sides, 60 degrees each. Therefore 6 x 60 = 360
    • This means that you can fit 6 triangles in a circular tessellation
  2.  Square
    • 4 sides, 90 degrees each. Therefore 4 x 90 = 360
    • This means that you can fit 4 squares in a circular tessellation
  3. Hexagon
    • 6 sides, 120 degrees each. Therefore 3 x 120 = 360
    • This means that you can fit 3 hexagons in a circular tessellation

Then we created a Generation Zero Triangle Twist

and then a Generation Zero and One Square pinch

Then… we started working on a hexagonal twist and it draped like a table cloth…which got me thinking about how table cloths could be part of a new dining experience. Just some food for thought.
